Measure a drawer before buying an organizer

Three measurements prevent a surprisingly common mismatch.

Use the drawer’s interior dimensions rather than the cabinet’s outside width. Measure the usable width at the front and back, since a drawer can taper or contain hardware that narrows the space. Record the smaller figure. Next measure usable depth with the drawer closed, allowing room for anything that projects into the interior.

Height matters as much as footprint. An organizer may fit flat on the bottom but prevent the drawer from closing once tall utensils are added. Measure the clearance to the structure above and account for handles, raised dividers and stacked tools. A strip of cardboard cut to the planned height is a useful dry check.

For an expandable tray, compare your measurements with both its closed and fully expanded dimensions. Expansion does not solve a tray that is already too wide when closed. Before buying, draw the footprint on paper and place your most-used utensils in the planned zones. If access feels cramped, fewer compartments may work better.
